University City

And The Delmar Loop

University City Missouri lies right in the heart of St Louis.  It all started with the purchase of an 85 acre tract of land along Delmar Boulevard in 1902 by Edward Gardner Lewis. University City is an awesome, diverse and easily walkable community with LOADS of different styles of homes. Just to the north of Washington University it’s a very popular neighborhood for students, faculty and stuff of the University because it is super walkable.

Not only can you walk to Wash U but you can also walk to Forest Park and all of the shopping, restaurants and entertainment in the Delmar Loop. There is easy access to the Metrolink with a stop right at Forest Park Parkway and Skinker. Easy access on the West side of U City to get to Highway 170 and the airport.

Not only is the community diverse…the housing styles are diverse too. There really is something for everyone. Lots of great apartment space available for the large student population. Some really beautiful homes in the area as well. From smaller more affordable bungalows all the way up to large sprawling historic estates. Most of the homes in the area were built between the turn of the century and the 1930’s. Lots of lovely art deco architecture, some beautiful Tudor style homes and loads of beautiful St Louis red brick.

The Delmar Loop

Delmar Boulevard runs through University City from east to west and offers an eclectic and fun mix of restaurants, bars, shopping and entertainment options. The Loop as has been a part of St Louis history and culture for decades. Blueberry Hill is one of the best known restaurants in the Loop offering hamburgers and wings, a full bar and a great smaller live music venue called The Duck Room.  If you are looking for something a little more adventurous the Loop offers so many options. Mission Taco, Fork and Stix, Pi Pizzeria, Seoul Taco, Ranoush, Three Kings Public House and my FAVORITE BBQ, Salt and Smoke.

The Loop has also become one of the best places for live music and entertainment in St Louis. The Pageant is one of the city’s most popular concert venues. Recently Delmar Hall right next door has added their name to the mix of great places to see live music in the Lou. If you are looking for something other than live music, see a movie at the Tivoli Theater or go bowling at PinUp Bowl.

University City and the Delmar Loop offer a ton of great annual events as well. My family and I make it a tradition to run the University City Memorial Day run every year as a great way to kick off the summer. The Loop Ice Carnival is a fun event right in the middle of winter when we need something to do to get us out of the house with ice sculptures, live music and food all along Delmar.

What else is it close to?

Everything

In addition to the gorgeous architecture of University City, the walkability to Washington University, Forest Park and the Delmar Loop…the location of U City is convenient to so much more. The Metrolink has easy access to get quickly to Lambert airport, Barnes, SLU and downtown St Louis.

The ability to walk to Forest Park just down the street is a huge bonus for so many of U City’s residents. Run the paths in the park, spend the day golfing and either of the two golf courses in the park, visit the History Museum, Art Museum, Science Center or our world class Zoo…all for free.

Three major roads intersect Delmar; Skinker, Big Bend and Highway 170 which allow for easy access to all parts of St Louis City and St Louis County. Hoping onto Big Bend will get you quickly to Clayton if you work there or if you are looking for more world class dining options.
